Autumn is that perfect time of the year for cool nights with crackling campfires, and Barefooters have been preparing! They have recently been working on fire-building skills and fire safety practices. Lucky for us, many counties are lifting burn bans after this year’s long and intense drought – just in time for the season. We are happily gearing up to spend fall nights under the stars and around the flames.
What comes to mind when you think of the perfect campfire experience? S’mores? Maybe your favorite flannel shirt? Cozy blankets? How about a good story?
Storytelling has been a part of the human experience throughout history and among all cultures, and so has fire. People continue to be mesmerized by fire. Gathering at a campfire is an opportunity to slow down and appreciate the company around us. Combining these two activities is an age-old tradition enjoyed by every generation.
To help engage the youngest generation in a memorable night of campfire tales, we’ve included a printable story dice. If you’re not familiar with story dice, here’s a quick how-to:
- Print and assemble the two cube templates. Download story cubes here!
- Roll them together to get a character and scenario prompt. (Example: Bigfoot gets lost in the woods.)
- Take turns rolling the dice and telling a silly story (or a scary story, or begin a story and pass it to a friend to continue.)
Enjoy!
