Making Elderberry Fire Cider at Forest School

October 27, 2024

Barefoot University, our forest school thrives on community collaboration and natural wellness practices. Recently, we embarked on a hands-on project to create a batch of elderberry fire cider, a potent herbal tonic known for its wide range of health benefits. Each mom in our community contributed one of the key ingredients, turning this into a shared experience of learning and healing.

Ingredients List:

Step-by-Step Process:

1. Preparation: Each ingredient is carefully chopped or shredded to release its potent natural properties. The amount of each item isn’t important, add what you have on hand. Moms gathered their chosen contributions, chopping garlic, peeling ginger, and slicing hot peppers, making the preparation process a communal event.
2. Mixing: Once prepared, the ingredients were placed into mason jars, layering them for a visually appealing display of fresh herbs, roots, and vibrant spices. The apple cider vinegar was then poured over the mixture, filling the jars and ensuring that all ingredients were submerged.
3. Fermentation: The jars were tightly sealed and placed in a cool, dark place to ferment for about 4-6 weeks. Throughout this time, the ingredients infuse the vinegar with their medicinal properties, creating a powerful tonic.
4. Straining & Storing: After the fermentation period, the cider is strained to remove the solids. The resulting liquid is the fire cider, ready to be used daily or as needed for immune support.

Benefits of Elderberry Fire Cider:

Fire cider combines the traditional immune-boosting properties of elderberry with a range of herbs and spices known for their health-promoting effects. Here are some key benefits:

• Supports the Immune System: Elderberry and garlic are powerful allies in strengthening the immune response, especially during cold and flu season. The cider is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, helping the body fend off infections.
• Promotes Better Blood Sugar Balance: The apple cider vinegar in fire cider has been linked to improved blood sugar regulation, which is particularly helpful for those managing glucose levels.
• Aids in Weight Loss: ACV and turmeric, both featured in this recipe, are known to boost metabolism and support weight loss by improving digestion and reducing inflammation.
• Helps with Infections: Fire cider contains antimicrobial properties from ingredients like garlic, onion, and horseradish, making it useful for fighting off bacterial and viral infections.
• Reduces Inflammation: Turmeric and rosemary are both known for their anti-inflammatory effects, which can aid in managing chronic pain and conditions like arthritis.
• Improves Digestion: Ginger, ACV, and horseradish support digestive health by stimulating stomach acids and digestive enzymes, helping to break down food more efficiently.
• Improves Skin Health: Thanks to the detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties of ingredients like elderberry, turmeric, and ACV, fire cider can also promote clearer, healthier skin from the inside out.

A Communal Tradition at Barefoot University

The experience of making fire cider was not only an exercise in natural health but also a beautiful bonding activity for the community. Each mom bringing an ingredient highlighted the importance of collaboration and shared knowledge, echoing the spirit of forest schooling at Barefoot University.

As our jars of elderberry fire cider continue to ferment, we are reminded of the deep connection between the land, our health, and each other. Once ready, this cider will become a staple in our homes, a reminder of the power of nature’s remedies and the community that helped create it.

By the time winter arrives, each family will have their own homemade batch of elderberry fire cider to support them through the colder months, keeping spirits and immune systems strong.
