Nature Scavenger Hunt Activity

February 20, 2023

Are you looking for a fun way to get your children outside and into nature?! Try our “Nature Treasure Hunt.” Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Create a list of items that can be found on your trail, such as different types of trees, birds, or wildflowers.
  2. Divide the into small groups or individuals and give each group a copy of the list and a map of the trail.
  3. Explain the basic concepts of map reading, such as how to use a key and how to follow a trail.
  4. Have the groups set out on the trail, and encourage them to use their maps to navigate and find the items on the list.
  5. As they find items on the list, they can check them off. The group that finds the most items wins a prize.
  6. At the end of the hike, have the groups come back together and discuss what they found, and how they used their maps to navigate the trail.

This activity will not only help children to learn the basic concepts of map reading and navigation but also help them to learn about the local environment and wildlife.

You can also make this activity more challenging by encouraging them to use a compass and to take a bearing of the next location or to draw their own map of the trail.

And don’t forget to take safety measures like wearing appropriate clothing and carrying first aid kits.

Happy Hiking!
