What is Barefoot University?

Our communities meet each week for forest school activities and nature exploration that align with our yearly Rhythm.  Our weekly activities teach nature-based sciences and outdoor skills. Our focus may be nature, but activities expand to cover art, citizenship, local history, math, science, life skills, physical education, critical thinking, and more!  Our communities also do field trips and community service projects throughout the year that often align with our activity themes.

Leaders help facilitate the meet-ups, but parents are their child‘s teachers!  It’s important for parents to know what the activity is beforehand in case your children need additional instructions or you want to take the activity deeper.

If you’re looking for a group that makes everyone sit in a circle and learn a lesson, BU may not be for you. We encourage participation, but we also encourage free play and exploration!

Barefooter of the Month

Clara
Lacey, WA

Congratulations June Barefooter of the Month, Clara!

Clara was nominated by her leaders for being a Barefooter that brings the sunshine wherever she goes. A Barefooter that is positive and compassionate! Way to go Clara!

Here’s what her leaders said about her, “Clara always has a positive attitude at barefoot. She is the first to volunteer to help carry things, read the story, help the little ones and is willing to share any extra knowledge she has of certain subjects. Clara is a great leader, she often creates games and leads groups of other kids in activities. Whenever a child gets “misplaced,” she is the first to help look for them or if a small child is upset she helps them find their mom. Clara always does the activities and helps others when they need help. She has been so wonderful to have in our Lacey, WA group this year!”

We couldn’t be more excited to nominate Clara as Barefooter of the Month. Your Lacey, WA group is more positive and united by having you a part of their community!

Nominations should be based on exceptional forest school skills; a special contribution to your BU or local community; exemplifying the core values of BU; being a good friend; outstanding attitude or attendance. Members, leaders, and parents are eligible.
